Inside a heating system, water should circulate steadily through the boiler, radiators and pipework. When that flow is restricted, water can become excessively hot in one part of the boiler. Small pockets of water may then boil and collapse, creating the familiar noise.

After cleaning, an inhibitor should normally be added to the system water. This helps slow future corrosion and reduces the chance of fresh sludge forming. Fitting or servicing a magnetic filter can also capture metallic debris before it reaches sensitive boiler components.
